Press Release Summary: God’s Word comforts survivors
Press Release Body: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Recent storms devastate Haiti
Large areas of Haiti remain devastated as four major storms recently flooded entire communities on the island—leaving thousands of people stranded and hundreds dead. Just four months into the Atlantic hurricane season, Haitians are desperate and destitute. “There is a lot of suffering,” said Jean Bilda Robert, Bible League’s national director of Haiti, “and the water has stripped everything from many families.” Days after Hurricane Ike hit major sections of Haiti, Robert visited Port-au-Prince. There he met Bijou. “I met her on the streets of Port-au-Prince,” shared Robert. “She told me that just one day before Hurricane Ike, a Bible League-trained Christian shared God’s Word with her. Then, devastation came to the island.” Bijou sat surrounded by thick, brown muck—the residue of a major storm. Her heart was heavy as she grieved during the aftermath of torrential rains. She explained to Robert her suffering: “I’ve lost everything. A husband. A baby. A home. But I still have the love of God in my heart. I still have joy because one day a Christian placed God’s Word in my hands.” Her two young children sat beside her mourning the loss of a sibling and their father. Fortunately, they know Jesus Christ as their Comforter. They know this because one man unselfishly shared the love of Christ with their mother. Bijou and her family remain displaced, and are relocating to an area west of Port-au-Prince. Tragically, the Christian who witnessed to Bijou was killed in the hurricane. Approximately 800,000 people like Bijou throughout the Caribbean have been affected by the storms. “We need more Bibles,” pleaded Robert. “Please pray for Haitian families in this time of tragedy, as we do all we can to get God’s Word back into their hands.”
